I have been in the dynamic shipping and freight industry for over a quarter of a century and worked in several sectors of the industry like clearing & forwarding, vessel operations, stowage planning, equipment control, sales and marketing and management, in various countries..

Why am I writing this blog..??

Education and learning are close to my heart and through years of experience I know how difficult shipping and freight business can be, even for seasoned veterans..

So I thought, why not make it easy and less scary (having known and experienced the feeling) for people who are new to the industry or want to join the industry..

So I decided to combine

  • my passion for shipping education and training
  • my knowledge and experience in the industry
  • my IT skills

and voilà, I started this blog relating to shipping and freight education in October 2008 ..

Another reason that I started writing this blog was also to create an awareness in the media about the shipping and freight industry which does not feature all that well when compared to other industries around the world..

How am I achieving this..??

Simple – I write articles about the processes and procedures in the industry which is based on my actual work experience and what I have learnt over the years..

A lot of the articles are also based on questions asked by the readers of this blog, so don’t feel shy, please feel free to ask questions or comment on any of the articles of interest to you..

    I have actually not come across such bills but heard it from my senior guys abt it. They were also saying that conventional berthing happens also when there is lack of berthing space @ the terminal. So like at such circumstances like how you said , when some other cargo( other than a break bulk cargo) is being discharged or loaded why is it going to cost us more? I am new to shipping industry and so seek clarification from you.

      Hi Pujitha, as i mentioned, if for example a container vessel has arrived and if it has to waste time waiting at anchorage, to save on the vsl waiting time, the port might offer a conventional berth where for example in this case, there is no special container handling equipment like gantry cranes etc and work has to be done using shore crane or ships gear.. In this case, as special arrangements have to be made, the costs for berthing and working at the conventional berth (where usually break bulk cargo is handled) will be more expensive than the container terminal..

    Hello there Hariesh!
    I just sumpled upon yur blog, and i just wanted to say that i like the simple style you are writing. If only i would have seen this blog 3,5 years ago when i started my study in the logistics field… It would have made things a hell of a lot easier!

    If you are still looking for subjects to write on, i might have a few suggestions. I am currently writing my thesis for a shipping company in Belgium to make the documentation process less prone to errors. (and also in here in Antwerp, it happens way too many times…). Maybe you could talk about some of the common issues?Being halfway through my thesis i have a pretty good idea myself, but it would be nice to hear some ideas from a different source too!

    Hi Pujitha, this is a very general question and could have any number of answers.. India is a big country with many ports operated by public and private sectors so it will be difficult to give a general answer.. Please can you be a bit more specific with regards to cargo type, which port you are talking about and any other info that will assist answering the question..??

    In general, conventional berth is where general break-bulk cargo operations take place and that berth will be equipped to handle only such cargo and if you are trying to load or discharge other cargo, then it might work out more expensive..

    Hi Hariesh, can i know the elaborated meaning of conventional berthing. In indian ports i believe stevedoring at conventional berth is 3 times costlier than that which is happening at the wharf. can u tell me why please.

    Excellent job on you blog. I have been connected to the shipping industry for over five years, and still have a lot to learn. Thanks for your very informative site. I’m a stowage planner for a shipping agency here in the Philippines, but i feel that my career is at the dead end. I think the stowage planner job is really not given that much of a priority from where I am. For me to feel more fulfilled, as a Computer Tech savvy, I took other responsibilities in our company. Can your site possibly help those who seek for a more fulfilling career in shipping? I can’t seem to find online for openings on Stowage Planning jobs.

      Hi Michael, glad to be of help.. As for your question, it all really depends on what you want to do in your life with shipping.. Stowage planning is an integral part of vessel operations.. Are you involved in vessel operations at all i.e the physical monitoring of the vessel and its operations while it is in berth etc..?? This could be also an item that you can look at to help you.. If you are looking for ONLY stowage planning jobs, then the best place to try would be with any Port or Terminal or its management companies like DP World, P&O Ports, Hutchinson etc.. All the best..

    Hi Jim, depends on the size of the package.. If it is small enough then the best option would be courier or airfreight..
