My question is that is there any standard demurrage free and detention free time or can shipper negotiate demurrage free time with the shipping line at the time of booking vessel for cargo so as to avoid demurrage cost for the buyer which is sometimes very huge. Or is it the the buyer who needs to negotiate free time at the discharge port?
Hi Lata, every shipping line has a standard demurrage and detention free time.. The booking party can negotiate additional free time with the shipping line before the shipment takes place if they anticipate any clearance delays, otherwise they can also try and negotiate after container reaches there, but this is usually more difficult than negotiating before shipment..
